I would contact the Wisconsin Bar Association at (608) 257-3838. They should be able to provide a referral to a lawyer who is an expert in this area or, at minimum, point you in the right direction.

Question by lostinlansingmi: What type of lawyer do you use to sue a department of a state.?
I am looking into suing a state over issue I have had with the department of ssi, and the department of the F.O.C, and I want to know what type of lawyer I can use to take on the state.

Best answer:

Answer by Princess Leia
It depends on your issue – did they deny your application for SSI benefits? If so, you want someone who specializes in that.

If it is for some type of personal injury – someone at the SSI Department hit you – then you want a personal injury attorney.

We need more facts to provide you with an informed response.

If you’re in law enforcement, how well does your department get along with the prosecutor’s office?

Question by Maci: If you’re in law enforcement, how well does your department get along with the prosecutor’s office?
What do you feel that prosecutors could do to help you that they aren’t doing? Are your local prosecutors arrogant or standoffish or too familiar?

Best answer:

Answer by Law Dog
For the most part, our department gets along fairly well with the State’s Attorney (our County prosecutor).
We get a little upset when they decline to prosecute someone we feel needs to go to jail or prison, and we get upset when we work hours building a case against someone only to have it “plea bargained” down to a lesser charge. (The conviction counts on the SA’s record, regardless of whether it’s a BS charge ot not.)

What are the differences and the similarities between a corporate legal department and traditional law firm?

Question by tikii: What are the differences and the similarities between a corporate legal department and traditional law firm?

Answer by ocdscale
It depends on which side of the fence you are.
If you are a prospective employee (lawyer):
A law firm typically offers greater growth potential because a firm can grow to accomodate more partners (pyramid structure). A corporate legal department typically has a fixed structure, you can’t get promoted until the guy above you retires.
Corporate work is generally a little less engaging compared to firm work simply because law firms are in the business of finding deals, while corporations actively seek to avoid legal trouble. This is especially true if you’re on the bottom rung of the ladder/pyramid.

There are advantages, corporate work may be more stable, and at the upper levels, you’ll be actively engaged in the goings-on of a corporation (very exciting work).

You should keep in mind that it’s relatively easy to switch from working at a firm to working for a corporation once you have some experience, but it’s extremely difficult to go from working at a corporation to working at a firm.

How much should a department assistant be getting paid at a law firm?

Question by johnny_tie: How much should a department assistant be getting paid at a law firm?
Well here’s the skinny; I have a friend that’s a department assistant at a law firm. She only works part-time, cause she’s also a full-time teacher. But she’s been working at the firm for about 9 years while teaching. Recently, she’s been wondering how much someone in her position at the law firm should be getting paid after working there for 9 years, and if it would be a good idea to ask for a raise. Can anyone help?

Tell her to go to payscale.com website. It will ask you a bunch of questions (skills, position, location, etc…) it will give you the end result of how much she should be earning.
