Q&A: Would you like tv to bring back the beer commercials and get rid of lawyer commercials/?

Question by logicmarty: Would you like tv to bring back the beer commercials and get rid of lawyer commercials/?
When a lawyer sues a store and wins, won’t the store have to raise prices to make up for the loss? And we pay for it. The lawyer, in effect is really taking money out of our pockets.

Best answer:

Answer by Mutt
1.) I see beer commercials all the time on TV. How can you bring something back that never was taken away?

2.) It’s only a very small handful of lawyers that advertise on TV. Those that do are the “ambulance chasers” of today. I would not use any that do advertise like this.

How do you like this Almost 1,000 ICE Office of Investigations agents will be reassigned exclusively to custom

Question by Untied States Of Latina: How do you like this Almost 1,000 ICE Office of Investigations agents will be reassigned exclusively to custom
Almost 1,000 ICE Office of Investigations agents will be reassigned exclusively to customs investigations, reducing the manpower involved in detention and removal of illegal aliens to 4,000 nationwide, according to documents obtained by The Washington Times and interviews with ICE union representatives.

ICE officials refused to comment on the internal documents or clarify the number of investigators that are to be reassigned.

The Washington Times has obtained an internal August memorandum written by ICE Office of Investigations Director Marcy Forman and Director John P. Torres, with Detention and Removal Operations (DRO), listing the new protocols for the agency.

Prior to the memorandum, the Office of Investigations worked hand in hand with Detention and Removal agents to remove and deport illegal alien absconders.

“[Detention and Removal] is a rapidly expanding program with the responsibility for ensuring that all removable aliens are detained in a safe environment and expeditiously removed from the United States. DRO has the responsibility for detaining and removing illegal aliens apprehended by ICE, [Customs and Border Protection] and, as resources allow, other law enforcement entities,” states the Aug. 20 memo. “It is the vision of ICE for DRO to assume primary responsibility for non-investigative administrative arrests, for example, state and local law enforcement response to interdiction of immigration violators or probation and parole referrals.”

How can I make a sheet cake look like gold bars?

June 11th, 2011 6 comments

Question by emily1980: How can I make a sheet cake look like gold bars?
Someone in our law office passed the BAR and I was thinking of making a cake, dying the frosting gold-colored, and cutting the cake into bars. What can I do to make it obvious that I was trying to achieve the look of gold bars? Is there some kind of inscription I can do on the bars? Any ideas appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew F
You might have to make it in layers. The top-most layer though may be a bit of a challenge, if you want a barish look with the “slant”. I’d coat it in a deep and rich yellow icing, for the look. Maybe find some gold sugar that glimmers and sprinkle that over it. Hope this helps!

What is life like as a high technology patent lawyer?

May 31st, 2011 No comments

Question by Ellie: What is life like as a high technology patent lawyer?
I know it is recommended that you have an engineering degree for undergrad. My friend is a software engineering major and was wondering if as a patent lawyer you have to spend a lot of time in front of a computer. He would prefer to not be in front of a screen all day and was hoping patent law would be a way out of it while still keeping his engineering degree. Does a patent lawyer spend most of his time with clients or computers? What is a “typical” day like? Thanks everyone!

Best answer:

Answer by Robert Z
It depends of course. There also is no typical day.
Are you doing litigation, filing and prosecuting patents, or licensing etc.?

Either way, when you start out, client contact may be minimal. At a Big Law Firm, new associates do a lot of grunt work. In litigation (patent litigation) this is endless document review in front of a computer. For patent litigation, you are unlikely to see a courtroom until at least year 4 at Big Law. For litigation you are unlikely to have much client contact until the same time period.

In filing and prosecuting patents, the same holds true, however, you may get more inventor interaction eariler. The problem is when you say High Technology in a lot of cases, that means a lot of money is at stake, so you will have to progress signifigantly in your career to get client contact.

As an attorney, you are giving legal advice or legal services. If you simply give advice during an interaction, the complexity of the advice is somewhat limited (how much can you prepare or convey during a conversation?). The majority of the advice/service given is detail oriented or involves the preperation of complex documents for use in and out of court or in front of the PTO. Therefore, until you are a big time partner and oversee associates and manage clients, you are unlikely to escape the computer.

It is probably similar with computer engineering. You start out programing. Then writing specs. Then managing those who write specs. Then Managing a programing project.

Q&A: I work at a law firm, and I have 3 attorneys that I would like to get a gift for Boss’s Day. What should I get?

Question by HelloMyLittleNightmare_a<3: I work at a law firm, and I have 3 attorneys that I would like to get a gift for Boss’s Day. What should I get?
They always get me something nice for Christmas and my birthday. I am short on cash, so it can’t be anything elaborate. I have picked out personalized cards, and I would love to get them something to go with it. Any ideas ?!?!?

What is it like being a lawyer, is it fun or alot of hard work and boring?

Question by Kate: What is it like being a lawyer, is it fun or alot of hard work and boring?
I’m doing a paper about lawyers and need advise. Preferably a lawyer.

Best answer:

Answer by bikeman501
Lawyers spend their working career writing, reading, and talking. Very few lawyers spend time in court. Being a lawyer is not like what you see on television.

From my experience lawyers probably work longer hours than most other people. So yes, being a lawyer is a lot of hard work. Like any other job, being a lawyer can be very rewarding or be pure drudgery. Fun or boring is up to the person, not the job.

Do law firms use volunteers to do simple office work like filing, making copies, etc.?

January 3rd, 2011 1 comment

Question by Natalie Nelson: Do law firms use volunteers to do simple office work like filing, making copies, etc.?
I love doing clerical work. I have volunteered at hospitals and charities and thought it would be interesting and fun to do such volunteering in a legal setting. I was thinking there may be some simple work that you don’t necessarily have to be a trained paralegal or legal secretary to perform. Maybe a volunteer could free up time that these professionals could spend on other duties. Is this possible? How would you go about it?

Best answer:

Answer by Judy
Not usually. Aren’t there any non-profits around for you to volunteer at?
